Mickey Mouse, Magic, Mystery And Opening Our Ears To Hear
Remember those Mickey Mouse ears you had as a child. You know, those cheap black things with the exceedingly large plastic ears. Well, recently those ears reminded me of the mystery and magic of life. Who knew Mickey's ears could literally be a sign from the Divine.
So, here's what happened.
I wake up and write in my journal nearly every morning. On this particular morning I journal about the power of prayer, asking the Universe for what I want in my life. Today I want signs. Fine, everyday I want signs. I want to be reminded of divine presence in my life.
Honestly, I struggle with this concept quite a bit. I mean, in theory I believe. However, just like you, my doubting mind pretty quickly kicks in. I see signs. I forget. I ask for more signs. I remember. Then I forget again. I’m fickle that way. And so the journey goes.
On this morning though I wanted to be reminded in an unequivocal way. Ask and ye shall receive. So that’s what happened, just not how I was expecting it - which is usually the case. This time those signs came, from all places, through Mickey Mouse's ears.
About an hour later I’m driving my kid to school and he turns to me and randomly says, “when we go to Disneyland this spring I’m going to ask the employees random questions about Disneyland because I just read they have to answer whatever you ask them.”
“That is random,” I say, “What are you going to ask them?”
“I’m not sure,” he says. “How about why Mickey Mouse looks like he does. I mean why are his ears are so big?”
“Umm” I say, trying to process the inner workings of the mind of a ten year old boy. “I definitely wouldn’t havre thought of that one. But now that you mention it, they do seem unusually large. Go for it. Ask away."
Fine, so it’s not that interesting, yet. Then we stop talking, turn on an audiobook ("Thou Shall Prosper," by Daniel Lapin) and, I swear to you, the first words out of the authors mouth are, “it’s like the creation of Mickey Mouse. Originally he looked more like an adult. However, his appearance was hanged to make him look more like a baby, a larger head, eyes and ears in proportion to his body….”
My son and I just sat there and looked at each other with mouths wide open. You simply can’t make these things up.
A seemingly random question, no sooner voiced was responded to by a seemingly random audiobook at a seemingly random place within the middle of this book, answering this random question in an exact and detailed way. That’s not random. That’s a coincidence in the literal meaning of the word.
A coincidence is not a random event in geometry. It’s the exact opposite. A coincidence is when two objects come together, fitting perfectly at that intersection were they were designed to coincide. That’s not random. That’s inspired just like all those coincidences in our life.
Just because we can’t always see how the pieces of our life fit together doesn’t mean they don’t. All of those seemingly random things happening all around us might actually be there in perfect union, every event an exact match with coinciding angles, agendas and purposes. It’s just that we don’t always open our eyes to see, or in this case to grow our ears to truly listen.
Once again the Divine came along to remind me of this magic and mystery thanks to Mickey Mouse and those ridiculously large ears. It reminded me that life is magical and coincidences abound at every moment if we are willing to believe in the signs and receive the messages when they come, whatever the form. For my son, however, who is far more innately spiritual (like his mother) and has believed in these things since the time he was born, he had a totally different take away.
"Damn,” he said. “If I knew I'd get an answer so quickly, I would have asked for a Playstation." OK, fine, so even the little mystic still has a few more things to learn and needs to open those ears, like the rest of us, so he can truly learn to hear the coincidences and see the signs when they appear!
