You Are Stronger Than You Think

After my dad killed himself I remember wondering if I could get through the grief. I doubted whether I would be able to find my way through the darkness. I doubted, on many occasions, whether I could move forward and resume my life.

I’ve studied the wisdom traditions, the mystical texts and inspirational teachers from near and far. I’ve read hundreds, perhaps thousands, of books on all aspects of moving through life with meaning, purpose and inspiration. And yet, nothing I have ever read has brought me more comfort than the words of Christopher Robin, saying goodbye, to his beloved friend, Winnie the Pooh:

If ever there is tomorrow when we’re not together… there is something you must always remember. You are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think.

When I’m in doubt about whether I can navigate through the darkness I just imagine my dad by my side, holding my hand, saying these words to me.

When you doubt yourself, doubt whether you can do this, whether you can make it, will make it, will be able to stay alive without your loved one by your side – close your eyes and imagine.

Imagine your loved one next to you. See their face. Smell their smell. Feel their touch. And hear them whispering into your ear, your heart and your life:

You are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think.

You You are not alone. You will get through this. You are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think.
